In a bold move, Seth Meyers, the host of "Late Night with Seth Meyers," took on President Donald Trump's recent social media attacks, sparking a heated debate. But here's where it gets controversial: Meyers isn't backing down, and he's using this opportunity to highlight a much bigger issue.
During his show on November 3rd, Meyers addressed Trump's comments, which described him as "deranged" and "untalented." Trump's post also suggested that Meyers' criticism of his Asia trip, particularly his focus on aircraft carrier catapults, might be illegal. Meyers, known for his consistent criticism of Trump, hit back during the "Closer Look" segment, emphasizing the real issues at hand.
"While the president is jeopardizing food assistance for millions, his posts about me seem trivial," Meyers said. He added, "You can call me names, but I'm not the one obsessed with catapults!"
This isn't the first time Trump and Meyers have traded barbs. In August, Trump criticized Meyers' talent and personality, to which Meyers responded during his show, "You have the right to free speech, and so do I. But let's focus on what really matters."
And this is the part most people miss: the impact of these exchanges on late-night television and free speech. In September, concerns arose when Sinclair and Nexstar Media Group stopped airing Jimmy Kimmel's show, following his comments about the "MAGA gang." Kimmel's critics argued he misled viewers, and the show was temporarily suspended.
Meyers, along with other late-night hosts, defended Kimmel and criticized Trump's involvement. Meyers acknowledged that responding to Trump might invite more criticism but emphasized, "I don't want to talk about bathrooms or catapults. We should be discussing the government shutdown and the lack of funding for food assistance."
SNAP benefits, relied upon by over 42 million people, lapsed on November 1st due to the government shutdown. Meyers concluded, "Working families are suffering, while you renovate and indulge."
